Pokémon Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Pokémon has been a staple in most all 90's kids lives. With Pokémon Green and Red creeping out of long grass and surprising us in 1996, came a video game series that would prove to become a cultural phenomenon.

It's been 20 years now since we first slotted those cartridges into our chunky Gameboys and found ourselves entrapped in a comical and magical world filled with strange creatures and hopeful trainers attempting to catch 'em all and become the best there ever was.

The power of the Pokémon is as clear as day with the sales figures clearly underlining the cultural and commercial success of the franchise. To this day the games have shipped over 275 million copies, over 20 billion Pokémon cards have been collected in 74 different countries and the TV series has seen over 800 episodes spanning 18 seasons. The numbers are staggering, you could say, they're super effective... Sorry.

To mark the occasion Nintendo is re-releasing Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow for the 3DS on the anniversary, February 27th.The 2DS can also expect to see special Edition bundles in transparent colors, complete with a sheet of Pokémon stickers to decorate the device, and one of the three Pokémon titles preinstalled.

What's more is Nintendo are releasing further Pokémon game titles through out the year. Soon we will get our hands on Pokken Tournament for Wii U, Pokémon Rumble World and Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon on 3DS, as well as Pokémon Go for our mobile devices.

The Pokémon trading card game will see the addition of the Pokemon TCG: Generations expansion that adds over 110 new cards. The expansion will be available this year, sometime in February.
