 Iconic Video Game Heroines

'A woman admired for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.'
A fine definition, thank-you, Google. There’s no better way to kick off a Top 5 list of our most memorable heroines in video games. In this list I’ll simply be judging our top picks based on their heroics, as much as I'd love to include Isabella from Dragon Age 2 for that sexy pirate outfit. It wouldn't be fitting to the characters that have sacrificed and given so much in each of their own separate situations. Rules applied: One female from one franchise only.

Yuna (Final Fantasy)
So, naturally right? I mean this girl discovers that to defeat Sin she must give up her life, and she still continues onwards with Tidus. The courage of Summoner who is just completing her pilgrimage is outstanding when faced with an almost inevitable ending. Yuna makes sacrifices that not many would accept emotionally and physically. So she's definitely a qualified Heroine and she looks darn pretty whilst doing it.

 Jill Valentine (Resident Evil)
It'd be silly really not to have her. Her mettle against the disasters of the T-Virus and Uroboros is inspiring. Would I like to be put in her shoes for a day? Hell no. Jill overcomes with leaps and bounds every single situation that she finds herself in. At one point literally leaping and bounding through a window with Wesker, with the intention of sacrificing herself not only to save Chris (come on guys, just get together!) but the world from Wesker's evil fascination of trying and failing to make himself mighty and powerful.

Ellie Williams (Last of Us)
The youngest of the list! Who says all the adults make the big courageous steps in life, aye? Ellie Williams, willing to give her life in a dangerous surgery to cure all of humanity from the cannibalistic infection, having known about it for some time and not backing down. It could be argued that she’s young and naive, as she is somewhat impulsive, but this girl shows a maturity that rivals many females in games. Through survivors guilt and monophobia she constantly perseveres and steps up to mark and delivers stunning performances of heroism. Thanks Ashley Johnson for the brilliant portrayal.

Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
Ultimately this was always going to be on this list, I mean it's Lara Croft, probably the most well-known female protagonist out there. From her fancy flips to her dual pistols, Lara holds a special place in everyone's hearts be it lust or frustration as she dive bombs into some spikes. Her appearance in the Tomb Raider reboot is something to marvel at, take a young woman finding her way in the world being thrust into a horrible survival situation where everyone wants her and her friends dead. She shows time and again throughout the game her determination to keep everyone safe. Without Lara, that group would of all have perished at the hands of Mathias and his goonies. She may have not saved the world, but she definitely saved the day. Plus it's a chick with a bow and arrow, instant win.

Samus (Metroid)
Samus Aran, a brooding and lonely hero. How is she brooding and lonely I hear you ask? Well despite many of her achievements especially the destruction of the Space Pirates on Zebes, her role in the ending the Galactic Phazon crisis and when she chose to destroy the deadly X Parasites, she suffers from depression after the death of her baby. Okay, not her baby, I mean the baby just hatched and saw her and then BOOM! Welcome to parenthood. But it shows Samus's grit that even in the aftermath of devastation she rises to be the hero, in a variety of different situations.

So there you have it, the top 5, these five are the bench-mark for developers in the future, the heroes that our game worlds have needed and we’ve loved to play. Of course there are many more heroines out there and hopefully there are many more to come.
